Senators and Veteran Join HealthSouth Harmarville For Technology Demo
— HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital hosted a presentation on Feb. 9 at the hospital, featuring ReWalk exoskeleton technology, a wearable robotic exoskeleton that provides powered hip and knee motion to enable individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) to stand upright and walk.
The system provides user-initiated mobility through the integration of a wearable brace support, a computer-based control system and motion sensors. The system allows independent, controlled walking and features the most precise fit and highest published walking speed.
Special guests, Sen. Jay Costa, Sen. Randy Vulakovich and Army veteran Gene Laureano, who has been using ReWalk’s exoskeleton since 2013, were present at the live demonstration. Laureano demonstrated the technology for guests and was available, along with ReWalk Robotics representatives, to answer questions about the technology.
“Before ReWalk, I was just enduring my disability,” said Laureano. “Now I’m enjoying life. I was taking medicine twice a day for back pain, and I’ve now stopped. My core is stronger and supports my spine better.”
Attendees also asked Sen. Costa and Sen. Vulakovich questions on how patients could advocate for better insurance coverage for access to technologies like the ReWalk exoskeleton and the inpatient rehabilitation services HealthSouth Harmarville provides. Currently, HealthSouth Harmarville is the only hospital in the Pittsburgh area where SCI patients can trial and train to use the ReWalk exoskeleton.
